This Week at Nuradio Concepts 4 January 2024

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2024. There are many exciting things I am getting into this year, and I wanted to start putting together a “News Letter” of sorts. Since I don’t have much of a following yet, I can just post these here and hope that someone sees it. I just want something that keeps a record of the progress of this blog and my adventures through technology.

What’s happening at Nuradio Concepts?

  1. Currently, I am working with a Graphic Design and Branding company to create the appropriate look and feel that I am seeking for the Nuradio Concepts brand. Be on the lookout for a new look and feel in the near future. I also plan on getting some swag made for those looking to support my endeavors.
  2. I have been approached to teach 5G Protocol theory. This is very exciting and also very strenuous. I have taught many Cellular courses before, but the added pressure of having to create my own content and make my “brand” flourish is a position I often find most prosperous. It’s what I imagine starting a business by yourself might feel like, I have to keep up my technical chops, conduct administrative duties, graphic design, etc.
    • Presentation Slides
    • Practical Exercises
    • Course Material and Handouts
  3. Continuously collecting data and content for new blog posts. I currently have three that in my blog drafts right now…
    • Network Reject Behavior Part 2
    • 5G Core Protocols and Interfaces
    • 5G Radio – Bandwidth Parts and Channel configuration

What am I working on?

  1. Open Air Interface
    • This morning before I left for work I dug out one of my spare laptops and loaded Ubuntu 20.04 on it, installed all of my favorite packages on it, and then started digging into the Open Air Interface documentation.
    • I tried this yesterday but was quickly met with a “This does not work with Debian 12” message.
    • I got the nr-uesoftmodem (5G UE Simulator) sort of running… But am running into some issues, as it usually goes with familiarizing myself with new programs. More to follow…
  2. SCAT and QCSuper
    • These are network analysis tools that can be used on certain make & model handsets. Finding the appropriate handset and then rooting those devices is another ordeal.
  3. Understanding what I can and can’t do with different Open-Source tools
    • srsRAN Project does not currently provide support for Other System Information (OSI), which makes testing UE Reselection and other behaviors a non-starter.
    • Voice over NR: Open5GS advertises support for VoNR, though I believe having the appropriate open-source IMS server is another hurdle.
    • I have yet to see multiple BWP configured on the same carrier. I am looking forward to being able to configure and test this when it is available on open-source software.
  4. Understanding what I can and can’t do with the tools that I have
    • Currently, I only have null encryption 5G SIM cards. I can configure Profile A in Open5GS and UERANSIM, though I am looking forward to testing with commercial handsets.
  5. Understanding and learning what I do not know…
    • You don’t know what you don’t know until you realize you don’t know it…
    • Docker
    • Containers
    • Cloud Deployments
    • the list goes on… One thing at a time!

What am I reading/listening to?

  1. Audiobook: Wireless Wars: China’s Dangerous Domination of 5G… by Jonathan Pelson
  2. Reading: 5G Core Networks (big surprise)
  3. Reading: Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte
    • I’m excited about reading this… Lately, I have felt like I do not know how to organize my thoughts and notes efficiently. I use OneNote, Craft, Obsidian, notes on my iPhone, handwritten notes, etc. I often search for long periods for something I knew I had written down. Or I jump from app to app when I know I should find a better way to consolidate all the information.
  4. Music: I have been in a music slump lately, as I go through occasionally. Gojira has been my metal of choice this week, though.
